The
prolific poet and journalist Ion Caraion (1923-1985) was persecuted
most of his adult life - under three successive dictatorships:
King Carol II (and his glittering court), Fascism, then Communism.
He spent the years 1951 to 1964 in labour camps, then went into exile
in Switzerland, where he died.

'THE ERROR OF BEING'
Where
are they taking you, master ? What
to do there, master ? Because
they have bullets, master ? Where
will they bury you, master ? Are
you frightened, master ? Who
shall be notified, master ? Have
you relations, master ? Will
it be OK, master ? Will
you have a cup, master ? I
wouldn't bother, master. You
don't want the cup, master ? Shall
we mourn you, master ? Good
night, master ! I
sleep alone, master. Good
death, master !
